Patrick Bateman: Their early work was a little too pedestrian for my tastes, but in 1995, I think they really came into their own, commercially and artistically. Neon Genesis Evangelion was an instant classic and it brought a new, grown up dimension to the mecha genre. Hideaki Anno has been compared to Go Nagai, but I think Anno-san has a far more bitter, cynical sense of humor.
